Reading the story of another survivor’s “long road from surviving to thriving” can help survivors at the begging of such a road find strength and faith. Reading the same story can help those who have never been victims understand that the hardest part is often not leaving but all that comes after one has left. In either case this story of one woman’s “long road from surviving to thriving” is an excellent account of many of the challenges faced by victims rebuilding their lives and how therapy can provide support along the way.

For some children who live with domestic violence school becomes a place of peace and safety. Yenthl and her mother Maria escaped domestic violence but then lived for two year staying in shelters or living in their minivan. Despite the challenges of domestic violence and spending the last year and a half of high school without a home, Yenthl graduated from high school, hiding her homelessness from friends. In May of 2011 she graduated from college with a degree in biology and plans to soon go to medical school. Read more of this inspiring story.

Making her Domestic Violence Pain serve a purpose

Susan Bird-Winbun lost her infant twins to domestic violence. Savannah and Tyler Yates where killed by their father, David Yates, after she left him because he was abusive to her. Bird-Winbun says she is “speaking out is to save people from living with the blame that I carry on myself. I am speaking so people know what to do before it turns into a situation – a tragedy – like it did with my children.” Instead of letting the pain destroy her she is using it as motivation to save others by being an advocate, opening a domestic violence shelter, and publishing her story. Christy Martin is a tough woman. That is not just a subjective opinion but also a fact. She is a boxer with a record of 49 victories and only five losses. Christy Martin is also a survivor of domestic abuse, which culminated in attempted murder by her husband when she tried to leave. Her story is a reminder that anyone can be a victim.
