May 25th, 2011 The relationship between Domestic Violence and eggs.
The first training I ever received on the topic of domestic Violence began with the following story.
Riana lovingly prepares breakfast of one scrabbled and one sunny side up egg, buttered toast and oatmeal for her husband. She decorates the tray beautifully with a cloth napkin and cut flowers from the garden. Riana serves her husband breakfast in bed. He responds by hitting her in the face with the tray. Why? Because the sunny side up egg was on the wrong side of the plate.
Hard to believe isn’t it? Well, my most resent scan of the Internet for domestic violence issues turned up a real life case of abuse incited by eggs. A woman was found abused in her front yard and said that she was beaten because she put to much milk in the eggs.
People living with domestic violence spend so much time and energy attempting to appease abusers. Let the “eggs” remind you that victims take on responsibility for the emotions and behaviors of the abuser. Many attempts to “get it right” to avoid abuser are useless. Poor cooking is not a valid excuse for abuse. Nothing is a valid excuse for abuse! The abuse is not really about runny eggs it is about the abusers inability to appropriately deal with stress and negative emotions.

I am in awe of the work you are doing to bring awareness to domestic abuse. There are many abusers who think their behaviour is normal and mock people who draw attention to their behaviour. Thank you!

Thank you for your comment! Helping people understand what is acceptable in a relationship is an important way to end domestic abuse.
